Meet the speaker
Sofia Quaglia
Journalist
Sofia Quaglia is an award-winning journalist. Her reporting has appeared in National Geographic, The New York Times, The Guardian, New Scientist, and the BBC, where she has also been editing on the health features desk. While she’s best known for writing about biodiversity, nature and the environment (especially little critters and why they matter!), much of her work also focuses on the body and mind. Among other things, she’s written news about vaccines, obesity, and autism, and she’s done deep-dive narrative features on the mysteries of migraine, faecal transplants, and neonatal surgeries. Part of her upcoming book, The Difference Between You And A Fly, will follow the work of scientists using fruit flies to diagnose and treat rare genetic diseases, explain alcohol addiction, and uncover the secrets of immunity.
How To Write Health News and Features
This class will break down the basics of writing about the body and mind. Quaglia will cover everything from breaking news on groundbreaking medical studies to deeply reported narrative features highlighting patients' experiences. She’ll also cover how to debunk misinformation surrounding health and wellness claims online, and why there is value in both health deep dives and health service journalism. Finally, she’ll unpack what it’s like to write about health in the first-person (for both serious and silly things!). This will be an example-led workshop, where Quaglia will walk attendees through her process and the behind-the-scenes of stories she has worked on in the past. These will include a health news story, two narrative features, a debunking piece, a service piece, and more.
You will learn the basics of health journalism: news, service, debunking.
