About the course

Freelancing doesn't have to be a feast-or-famine life. This is your crash course in how to make it work! You'll learn how to set your rates, build relationships with clients, negotiate anchor gigs, juggle multiple assignments, work efficiently, and stay motivated. The session will cover how to set an hourly rate, structuring your freelance portfolio, tracking projects and invoices to get paid, and setting healthy boundaries. Participants will leave the session with a slew of new tools and strategies for becoming an emotionally and financially sustainable freelancer.

Katherine Reynolds Lewis

Katherine Reynolds Lewis is an award-winning science journalist and author, founder of the Institute for Independent Journalists, special projects editor for Greater Good Magazine; and a columnist for Nieman Reports. Bylines include the Atlantic, Fortune, New York Times, Parents, Slate, and Washington Post. Her book The Good News About Bad Behavior grew out of Mother Jones’ most-read story. Fellowships include O’Brien Public Service Journalism, MIT Knight Science Journalism, Medill and RJI innovation. She has taught at American, Marquette, and Northwestern Universities. A Harvard physics graduate, Katherine previously worked as a national correspondent for Newhouse and Bloomberg News.
